Leave Laws Aren’t Just for the Big Guys

I’m excited to share that I’ll be speaking at the Palmetto SHRM Half-Day Conference on September 19th! My session will focus on an issue that many small and mid-sized employers overlook: leave laws when you have fewer than 50 employees.


When we think about leave, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) usually comes to mind—but FMLA only applies to organizations with 50 or more employees. That doesn’t mean smaller employers are off the hook. There’s a growing patchwork of state leave requirements, pregnancy accommodations, paid sick leave mandates, and overlap with other employment laws (like the ADA and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act) that can apply regardless of size.


For small organizations, this creates unique challenges—and opportunities—to design leave policies that are both legally compliant and supportive of your team.
